Eddie Waldrep’s Activism Raises Questions About Suitability for School Board

Dr. Edward “Eddie” Waldrep, a candidate for the Academy District 20 School Board, has faced scrutiny regarding his activism during his employment at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Known for outspoken opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Waldrep’s activism at the VA notably resulted in administrative restrictions, including barring him from supervising or mentoring student interns.

In April 2024, Waldrep publicly aired grievances in an essay titled “Viewpoint Discrimination and Retaliation in the VA,” published on the conservative platform Wrong Speak Publishing. In his piece, Waldrep accused the VA of imposing what he described as a “radical political ideology” under the guise of DEI programs. His vocal opposition to these initiatives led to internal conflicts, ultimately prompting the VA to restrict his professional interactions, specifically prohibiting him from working with student trainees.

This restriction is significant, as mentorship of student interns is a fundamental responsibility within Waldrep’s clinical psychologist role, where professionals are expected to demonstrate impartiality, foster supportive environments, and guide trainees without ideological conflict. The VA’s decision to remove this responsibility from Waldrep underscores the severity of concerns regarding his ability to maintain professional neutrality and a supportive educational environment.

For Academy District 20 voters, this raises pertinent questions: If the VA found Waldrep unsuitable to mentor students due to his ideological activism, how appropriate is it to entrust him with oversight of an entire school district’s educational policies and student welfare? Given that school boards must manage diverse student populations and maintain inclusive educational environments, Waldrep’s past conflicts could indicate future governance marked by controversy and disruption rather than collaborative leadership.

As Academy District 20 voters weigh their choices, Waldrep’s history at the VA provides an essential perspective on his capacity—or lack thereof—to provide impartial, effective leadership in educational settings.
