In response to this story: https://krdo.com/news/top-stories/2022/10/06/protest-criticism-of-school-board-president-highlight-tense-district-20-school-board-meeting-thursday/ I sent Scott (reporter on scene who interviewed me, aired & wrote the column) the following email: Hi Scott, Derrick here, you'll recall me from last Thursday at D20 in Chapel Hills. Wh…

* His reply: Mr. Wilburn: Thanks for your comment on our coverage. About your first point… I did say in the story that someone who was at the meeting disputed that accusation. The second point… I had just enough time to get a comment from who was for and against the school board president (based on who was willing to be interviewed) before I had to cover…

I just got this image from a concerned parent at DCC middle. It’s the yearbook. He feels it’s pushing the LGBT message. Agree or disagree?

Good follow up, and at minimum hopefully he gets that lazy reporting often leads to inaccurate reporting. He at least knows you won't sit back and let an incorrect story end….but will follow it up until corrected!

I agree it is LGBTQ, the teacher sponsoring yearbook is def a liberal. I would ask this teacher to not use the yearbook to push the LGBTQ message this coming year. I would have been really angry if I paid for one and got this. They should definitely preview the cover so that people know what they are getting.

It is very concerning what is up in the library at Challenger. If I was a parent there, I would be very upset.

SUCCESS STORY: Mr Romero at DCC middle agreed to remove Hunger Games from our daughter’s 6th grade curriculum across the board as a direct response to our petition!! Hunger games is NOT the worst book out there – I actually love the series personally but the kids killing kids we felt was too heavy for 6th graders. Got that update today, just an hour after I…

It was another contracted group focused on educating teachers in concepts like how to respond to microaggressions and using preferred pronouns. I don’t know if it was done by district or individual schools, but at least two middle schools had them come in to talk to their teachers about ways to be more woke.

It’s my wife’s birthday so can’t make it. Would be fun. These are the signs I held at the north entrance of the Navy game. Just sayin’.

Speaking of school library books – what are the thoughts of this group? After hearing some reasonable solutions last night from Kristy, I think we should discuss books and prioritize against other initiatives with ADK. And understand if/how inappropriate books supports our mission resulting in academic excellence.

For example, do we focus on the actual books in elementary school and then the access of such books in middle school (have a parent permission process or a section of the library dedicated to more mature audiences), and/or have the opposite of these books added to said libraries?

I agree books should have more descript ratings but that isn't something our group can influence. And what's age appropriate is subjective. That's why we need some sort of standard. While I agree that many are not appropriate for school libraries esp middle and below, our group mission is around delivering academic excellence. Now parental choice is also a p…

Success = a change in district policy wherein book decisions are no long site-specific, i.e., in the hands of each individual librarian. That way the lefties just find "their" librarians and get books crammed into our elementary & middle schools. As much as I'm an anti-big-gov, anti-top down guy, this is what we must advocate for & it will fall into the lap…

It was pointed out to me that in our book evaluation process, federal law might actually be getting violated at D20 currently: “Federal law strictly prohibits the distribution of obscene matter to minors. Any transfer or attempt to transfer such material to a minor under the age of 16, including over the Internet, is punishable under federal law… visual repr…

Check out the following update on Advocates' key priorities and please provide feedback. We want to follow-up and close a few items and begin to look forward. Do you think curriculum will have tangible results and positively impact academic excellence? Are we on the right track? Are there any other projects we should consider? – Strategic plan petition is be…

https://www.nbc12.com/2022/08/30/hanover-school-board-passes-transgender-bathroom-policy/ This is a process that maybe d20 could similarly reccommend.

Maybe we can have a break out group work on a policy/process for transgender issues? Who's interested? We can start a separate thread.
