Community Petition Surpasses 1,000 Signatures, Urges ASD20 Leaders to Reject Hiring of Brad Miller

Brad Miller is not just another attorney. His work in other school districts has coincided with escalating legal costs, ideological litigation, and deep community division. Before Academy District 20 moves forward, the public deserves a clear look at the documented record.

Community Petition Surpasses 1,000 Signatures, Urges ASD20 Leaders to Reject Hiring of Brad Miller

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The D20 Accountability Project announced today that a community petition urging leaders of Academy School District 20 to reject the hiring of Brad Miller as district legal counsel has surpassed 1,000 verified signatures in just days.

More than 83% of petition supporters reside within core District 20 zip codes – 80920, 80924, and 80919 – demonstrating that opposition is concentrated among families and residents most directly affected by the decision.

The petition calls on the Superintendent and Board of Education to halt any effort to retain Miller, citing concerns related to transparency, fiscal exposure, conflicts of interest, and the potential use of public school districts as vehicles for ideologically driven litigation.

“This level of engagement in such a short period reflects significant local concern,” said a spokesperson for the D20 Accountability Project. “More than a thousand community members, overwhelmingly from within the district, are asking leadership to slow down, be transparent, and select legal counsel focused on compliance, restraint, and student well-being.”

Concerns Raised by Petition Supporters:

  • Lack of transparency surrounding the potential hire and limited public engagement
  • Escalating legal costs observed in other districts that have retained Miller’s firm
  • Use of school districts as legal test cases, diverting focus from classrooms to controversy
  • Conflict-of-interest risks, including overlapping professional or organizational ties
  • Exposure to unnecessary liability, including costly lawsuits and reputational harm

Petition supporters argue that these risks divert time, money, and attention away from students, educators, and core educational priorities.

Community Position:

The petition states that Academy District 20 requires independent, non-ideological legal counsel focused on:

  • Student well-being
  • Fiscal responsibility
  • Legal compliance
  • Risk reduction
  • Community trust

According to supporters, hiring Brad Miller would move the district in the opposite direction.

Call to Action:

The D20 Accountability Project calls on the Superintendent and Board of Education to:

  1. Immediately halt any effort to retain Brad Miller as district legal counsel
  2. Commit to a transparent, competitive, and publicly accountable legal hiring process
  3. Select counsel with a demonstrated record of neutrality, restraint, and cost control

The petition remains open as additional community members continue to add their names.
